Fine Woodworking by Ray Allard

BUILDING PHILOSOPHY

I prefer building one-off items, and do so mostly on spec, rather than by commission, although I occasionally will build something to order. I prefer “organic” furniture, such as my Birch Bench, or simple, clean lines, as seen in Japanese furniture or pieces by James Krenov, whose work was the inspiration for my tiger maple and walnut display cabinet. While I enjoy and own classic, antique pieces, I do not build in that style, or do reproductions. I also do some architectural finish work and built-ins.

All my furniture is designed by me, and takes into consideration wood movement. I prefer solid hardwoods for most applications. I use a lot of mortise and tenon joinery, and often hand cut dovetails. It is not uncommon for me to search out unusual wood, and then determine how it would be best utilized.
